What is a service charge?

A service charge is an optional fee that you can add to an invoice or estimate. This charge is applied to the entire invoice or estimate total, regardless of how your customer pays. Important: This feature is not designed to impose a fee only for credit card transactions; this is known as Surcharging. Surcharging is regulated and may be restricted by card networks and state laws. Please consult your legal advisor if you need guidance.

How to add a service charge to an invoice or estimate

1. Go to Sales > Invoices

   1. For Estimates go to Sales > Estimates. 

2. Start a new invoice / estimate or open a draft.

3. Scroll to the Subtotal and Tax section.

4. Select Add service charge.

5. Choose one charge type and amount: flat dollar amount ($) or a percentage (%) of the total.

   • Flat fee $: Up to $999.99.

   • Percentage % (of the total): Up to 100%.

6. Enter the amount and select Apply.

   • Select Cancel to go back.

7. The service charge has been added and will show on the invoice or estimate preview page.

   • Note: If the invoice is recurring, the service charge will carry over to the rest of the series. 

Can I edit or remove a service charge?

Yes, as long as the invoice or estimate is in draft status the service charge can be removed. 

1. Go to Sales > Invoices

   1. For Estimates, go to Sales > Estimates.

2. Select the applicable invoice or estimate.

3. Scroll to the Subtotal and Tax section and locate the service charge.

4. Click pencil icon to open the Edit Service Charge pop-up.

5. Make your changes, or click Delete to remove the Service Charge

6. Click Apply to confirm.

   1. Note: Once deleted, the option to “add service charge” will become available again.
